A book in Devnagri Script-Exploring links and memories

Internal and external immigrants are known to have reading groups which help them foster a sense of identity and security.

A book in Devanagri script

Last meeting, Dr.Bachchoo Singh brought a Gita in Devanagri script, printed at Gita Press, Gorakhpur.

“It was given to me by Dr.Gaur, the anatomy teacher at the University who had stayed in Libya since 1974, being one of the first founders of the department.”

Dr.BS himself has been in Tripoli since 1988 and our weekly reading sessions were enhanced by this addition to our library.

Community activities

“Our embassy is not able to lobby well for such things. They could not procure land or building to have a community school,” Dr.BS, a veteran of many struggles told.

A medical doctor, who has seen lot of things, I once took an extended life-story interview of his .

“I taught science in the community school for two years at the high school level,” he told me.  According to me, this is one of his most impressive acts.

It is easy to criticize but very difficult to do.

Narratives of community

Recalling the civil society which develops around expatriate communities  I remembered the school fairs which taught me so many things. To read a full narrative you can follow the links below

“However, one does develop some type of life here. Watching the school fairs, seeing the stalls of different nationalities, the books which one would otherwise never have come to know of, gathering perspectives of writers who have spelt out the secret lives of the families of their societies, the shame and longings which are common to humans.”

Community centers in Tripoli region.

If the various Christian communities of different churches-Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans can petition and acquire premises for churches why can the Indian community not acquire a premise?

“Will it be secular, or will there be religious connotations?” was the immediate next question.

“We will have a library with a wide range of books, ranging from history of the mutinies to conditions of Working class to the classic religious texts.”

Reading groups have their links and chains which stretch far and wide. I remember a copy of Bible given to me by a Nigerian footballer Carlos whom I met in the Dahra church and became good friends with. The Bible was printed in a press in Bandra, Mumbai.

The book in Devnagri script presented by Dr.Gaur to Dr.Bachchoo Singh opened many past links and memories. How the community was organized in this area for the past four decades came alive in many ways in a lively discussion over a book in Devanagri script.

Preview-TRG meeting topics and themes

Happy new year!  Meeting 1_2012

To buttress our understanding we are trying to go into specifics of meanings.

Gita Readings:Dictionary project :Meanings of words from scriptures

Sankhya Yoga- System of self-realization, primary emphasis is laid on the direct perception of the Universal self through constant meditation.

Parth     Etymologically-Son of Pritha. In Mahabharata, “Pritha” is one of the names of Kunti.          Subtler meaning-A person who bases his existence on gross entities

Parantapa- Person capable of scorching his opponents

( Giving undue importance to preservation of only gross existence, results in unmanliness. Considerations of worldly possessions, luxuries, family ties etc make a man’s consciousness gross; and the efforts which he makes to acquire them use up his energies. But when consciousness is directed towards Contemplation of Universal Self,by turning away from the gross, then it conquers faint-heartedness and burns up all negative thoughts.)

Gudakesa-Conqueror of sleep (one of the names of Arjuna)..Here it signifies conqueror of the sleep of delusion, surrendering to the Universal Self for waking up fully into enlightenment.

Management perspective

Discussion theme-What was my best and worst idea. Last week we had discussed the experiences of a Radiology Chair who reflected on how tolerating the disruptive behavior of a celebrated Physician scientist harmed his department.

This week participants will come and discuss their own experiences

Philosophy:Remembering Vaclav Havel-Reconnecting to our humanity:

“When Jan Patočka wrote about Charter 77, he used the term “solidarity of the shaken:’ He was thinking of those who dared resist impersonal power and to confront it with the only thing at their disposal, their own humanity.” What do these words mean to you in the current situations in the world, your region?

Tripoli reading group-Year end meeting-2011

Picking up the threads, a small gathering of the TRG met and  read out some maps, articles, notes ranging from Philosophy to Medicine.

Remembering some conversations and inspirations.

The Tripoli Reading group is inspired by a veteran educator who taught some lessons on how to learn from the Subaltern.

“Is the medical refugee the same as the subaltern” I once asked him.

“No!” he answered.

“But a medical refugee can be in a worse condition than a subaltern”

That conversation started some discussions which go on…..

Different Expatriate communities lived and organized

in Libya in many creative ways

“It will take the expatriate community at least three years to recover. First year, the workers will return, next year the families, the third year the schools will get proper staff” one long term expatriate worker mused.

Friends of Bouazizi: Do not ask about Yasin-a friend told me to stop being Naive

Friends of Bouazizi

“Where is Yasin” I asked naively, as I had not seen him for a few days. One of my Libyan friends warned me- “Do not ask about Yasin, otherwise you will be in trouble.” Some friends joined him over the months. Some disappeared and then re-appeared armed and ready to fight it out. Some were killed when the second uprising took place in August

At the conclusion of World War II, Libya’s people were among the poorest in the world. Apart from income derived from the military bases of the USA and UK, Libya’s primary source of income was from scrap metal converted from the considerable stockpile of war debris scattered over the country. Things started changing when oil was discovered in 1959.

Non-secular versus Secular:Putting oneself on pedestals.

Giving examples of words from letters, one student said A for apple, another said A for Allah. One of the persons of the reading group objected to the use of “non-secular” example of a word by saying that there were so many words in languages-why use Allah?

The discussion that followed was full of energy, passion, and sometimes even verged on becoming overly personal. We went into the “holier than thou” attitudes of certain groups and individuals.

“The moment you call someone Non-Secular, aren’t you implying that you are secular and hence putting yourself on a pedestal?”

We smiled together.Point taken. Lesson learned.

Communications during consultations : Need for open culture

Do you have a review mechanism in your institution to discuss events when you felt that your consultations with patients could have been better handled?

Doctors are generally defensive about discussing these things amongst colleagues.

A recent article in a journal states that doctors wanted an open culture whereby they could talk about difficult and emotionally challenging consultations without fear of being considered incompetent by their Consultants, who act in a clinical supervisory role(IJME.2011;2:159-169)

On putting this question in our “Reading Group” there was a mixed response.

“One of my mentors had cautioned me about discussing treatment options with a patient. But is part of a radiology consultation not doing that? But with whom should this discussion be made-with the patient or the referring treating doctor?”

In a multi-disciplinary atmosphere, these lines are often not well defined. One Neurosurgeon I know does not want even a written report to be given for his postoperative cases, leave aside discussing with the patient or relatives.

A need for open non-threatening culture may help all concerned.

My worst idea-Tolerating a disruptive celebrated Physician Scientist

Next week members of the group will reflect on what their worst idea was, after listening to a journal article in which a department chair reflected on how tolerating a disruptive physician-scientist altered his organizational dynamics and hampered patient care.(JACR July 2011)

With many celebrated heavy weights leaving the hospitals and joining private practice, this issue has direct implications for some full-timers. Hence the need for discussion on the clinical and management issues involved. Looking forward to this discussion next week.
