What is Satsang?

What is Satsang?

One of the definitions of Satsang-(the Sanskrit word sat=true, sanga=company) is to be in company with an assembly of persons who listen to, talk about and assimilate the truth. The experiences with mass observations and prayers in different settings  by followers of  different spiritual traditions made me reflect on these processes.

HOLY SPACES..prayers

Right from school (studied in a convent St.Vincent’s High School, Pune where there used to be moral science classes and a chapel where Catholics used to do confessions), to the Mass observations of the expatriate community of San Francisco Church of Dahra Tripoli where I went last Friday-(2/12/2011) the first holiday after coming back from a journey which made me revisit, reconnect and observe some traditions of Satsang-I have observed the different cultural mythology found in religious practices and its differences with spirituality.

Is Satsang the same as Communion practiced by Christians?

What are the differences, what are the similarities?

Bilu-Kedar Temple-Near Kirti Nagar-Pauri Garhwal

Met the same priest who had said prayers for my father. Now we did the same rituals for my mother. One of my cousins is a proclaimed Atheist.

“When life  teaches and tests, the biggest Atheists become theists” the father of the rational wave 16 year old told with quiet confidence.

Billu-Kedar Temple:Pauri Garhwal- The priest here knows three generations of our family. One of our family members -a young 16 year rationalist challenges these rituals. I quickly revised some definitions of Theism with him

I quickly went through the definitions of Theism, Deism, Pantheism, Atheism with the teenager to equip him better for the debates which he finds himself in, especially in what is called-Devbhoomi-Uttaranchal

Meerut-The Gita reading groups

Had a reunion with an old friend at Meerut. We met Shri D.M.Sinha, the inspiration behind the Gita reading groups. Born in Bijnor in May, 1922, he began his association with Rehana Tayyabji in 1967, and later with  Hanuman Prasad Poddar,Editor –“Kalyan” and other spiritual practitioners of Shivananda Ashram, Rishikesh which helped him develop on the spiritual path.

Gita Discussions- Meerut: Waiting for old age to read the Gita is as ridiculous as studying Engineering after spending a lifetime building faulty bridges

These all fall into the realm of Neurolinguistic Programming.(NLP) which  is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as “a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them” and “a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour”

Evening  winter tea- Reconnecting with some old themes

A Poem by the Ganga-Rishikesh:                                                                                        Is poetry just for pleasure or a source of moral instruction.
Aristotle used to believe that Poetry is a greater moral
instructor than history as poetry deals with the universal, while history deals with the particular

Remembering Bijender

If Satsang is to be  company with an assembly of persons who listen to, talk about and assimilate the truth, I recalled an old friend, with whom I used to have tea on foggy winter evenings.

We shared some truths.

Evening walk in Rome

City fathers of the Eternal City-Gazing through Time

Despite some warnings from locals about the distance, I decided to follow the map and took a lovely evening walk through Rome.Night photography has a charm of its own. The same structures look very different than during the day.

I ignored warnings about possible mugging. No one troubled me.

The Spanish steps were the first landmark, followed by Fontana Trevi, Piazza Venezia and then as the night became more mature I traced the steps past Foro Cesar to the Colosseum.

Piazza Venezia

Night approach to the Colosseum-The Flavian Amphitheatre-Built from AD 72 to AD 80 during the reign of Vespasian

The return was a bit confusing, but eventually I agreed to the advise of locals and caught the bus back from the Colosseum (Route no 30. Other buses are 81,87 ) to Piazza Cavour. One has to buy the tickets for the local buses beforehand from vending machines which may be an issue with visitors esp in the night. Another tip is that one has to be a bit quick to hop on to the buses, otherwise the doors close.

Foro Cesar..Forum of Cesar . Built in 51-41 BC. by Julius Cesar after the conquest of Gaul

Viewing and photographing these in the night has a different feel and charm.

This is a walk one can take with great ease and much fulfillment.Keep walking

Walks and reunions in Malta

After finishing some interesting discussions, meeting some old friends and wandering around in the backstreets of Parel, Colaba, Malad, Thane, discussing many nuances

http://prashantbhatt.blog.co.uk/2011/11/10/walk-through-mumbai-12145728/

I boarded the 4.20 flight to Dubai enroute to Malta with a heavy heart.

Returning to the Mediterranean

This home coming was different.

In these months, some people showed sympathy, some showed patronizing

condescension and others just prayed that this ordeal will be over.

Some people warned me not to stick my neck out too much by writing
Jago-Re “Wake-Up” articles.  www.chowk.com/writers/2323

“ Do not think people cannot understand what you mean
by Passing Sidi Gaber

or what type of Night-Watchmen( http://www.chowk.com/Views/World/The-Night-watch-Seeking-for-Lost-Time)

you are referring to” a genuine well-wisher told me.

We searched for lost time.

The past month has been one of long walks, visits to the Himalayas for a very
personal reason and many reunions with friends and family, chewing grass on the
lawns of Lodhi gardens and India Gate. Some water has flown past, some breeze
has blown

https://prashantbhatt.wordpress.com/2010/06/29/children-growing/

When my visa was ready my dear friend and nephew Mayank was very upset.

“Give me the passport and I will tear off the visa page. Who is going to take me to
watch the paintings in National gallery and read books at Bahrisons Kidz of
Khan market?”

Enrich your life with a read a day

is a creed I want to instil in the children.

We went to Sri Ram Centre and watched the comedy-Taj Mahal Ka tender.

Remembering some kindness

As I sat with at friends in Spinola Bay of St.Julian’s Malta, and recalled some
journeys and vibrations, the need for the children to come out of their shells
came through.

The Mediterranean charms have been kind to me and
added a richness to life which I had never envisaged.
